Ken Rosenthal on the Baltimore Orioles GM

Ken Rosenthal - who used to be the sports editor at the Baltimore Sun - wrote this article for Fox Sports. It is aptly titled "O's need to start with a strong GM."

The Orioles lead the majors in sideshows, whether announcing their separation from disgraced first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, conducting seances with right-field ghost Sammy Sosa or attempting to void the absurd contract that they gave right-hander Sidney Ponson. Their season has featured DUIs, B-12s and, after a promising start, plenty of "Ls."

It's time for someone to take responsibility.

Not the players, though accountability from Palmeiro, Sosa and Ponson certainly would be welcome.

No, the only one who can fix this mess is owner Peter Angelos, who invariably blames others for the franchise's problems.

The Orioles need to end their inexcusable run of eight straight losing seasons at one of the sport's great revenue-producing ballparks, Camden Yards. They need to hire a strong general manager as quickly as possible and invest him with authority. Otherwise, they will remain the sport's biggest embarrassment, a sleeping giant that continues to snore.

Of course, initiating such a turnaround will be easier said than done under Angelos, who has presided over the franchise's demise since taking control in 1993. But the Orioles' stunning collapse — they're 23-44 since the All-Star break, the third-worst record in the majors, after spending 62 consecutive days in first place during the first half — reflects the organization's lack of direction.

Hurricane Rita

Rita is lingering off the Texas coast as a category 4 storm. Yesterday it was a category 5 with 175 mile per hour winds. Houston and Halveston are the target cities. New Orleans is under a tropical storm watch - just what they do not need. Landfall from Rita is expected within 24 hours.

Dallas All-Hands Meeting

Perot Systems held the consulting group's first all-hands meeting in Dallas Friday and Saturday.

Justin stands beside a photo of Ross Sr. while touring the Plano campus. An associate snapped this photo with a camera phone. See any resemblance?

All day meetings Friday and Saturday morning have me quite tired. Was able to make an earlier flight returning to TPA. I told a colleague that I was going to tell the gate agent "I want to leverage your stand-by list - the value proposition for you is an extra seat on your later flight - and it will create synergy for me as I get home earlier." Yes, I heard way too many terms this weekend!

Mark Mayfield, the Corporate Comedian, was brought in Friday night. His stress relief routine was awesome. He talked travel, kids and more. Definitely an enjoyable evening. Take away items: look at everything with a different perspective. You can find humor in anything and everything!

Camping at Sertoma - Bluegrass festival

9D9G7311.JPG This labor day weekend was spent at the Sertoma Youth Ranch. Their twice annual bluegrass festival was held Fri-Mon.

A group of Lakeview friends and I camped out this weekend in Brooksville. When I say camped out I mean slept in RV's with air conditioning and TV. (big grin) The best part of the bluegrass festival was Jerry and crew pickin' late at night. Oh, and they have some massive beetles up there!

The full photo album can be found at http://gallery.4digipics.com/sertomabluegrass. This is a private album and you must have an appropiate login ID and password.
