VERTICAL DROP, LONGEST RUN # TRAILS MY RATING MY DESCRIPTION
Canaan Valley, WV 850 ft, 5280 ft 34 9.5 of 10 Canaan is state run (WV). With 34 trails and tons of natural snow - in scenic Canaan valley - Canaan Resort is a top-notch facility. Prices are competitive/reasonable. And Value season starts early (March 1). Night skiing is limited. While in town, check out Timberline.
Camelback, PA 811 ft, 6000 ft 32 9 of 10 Considered the best of the Poconos, Camelback is big and skiing is fantastic. The snow is usually a mix of natural (it snows frequently) and manmade (90% coverage). The resort is out-of-town and away from the big pricey Pocono resorts. Makes a great get-away with travel time around 4+ hours.
Greek Peak, NY 900 ft, 1.5 mi. 38 8 of 10 Just one hour north of Camelback sits huge Greek Peak. The resort offers 2 mountains with great skiing. The slopes are not difficult - almost not challenging enough. Price is good - and check out the line of shaped rental skis. The runs are long and the view is perfect. A great place to ski!
Roundtop, PA 600 ft, 4100 ft 14 2 of 10 Why did this ski area receive a 2 out of 10? They are small, very pricey, customer service is non-existent, and they attract large crowds. On a Saturday or Friday, lift lines could be 30 minutes long. Did I mention pricey too? I have vowed not to return to Roundtop. There are much better slopes in this area. (They are lucky I gave them 2...)
Timberline, WV 1000 ft, 2 mi 34 10 of 10 Right beside Canaan Valley is Timberline. Privately owned and operated is this resort, slightly larger then Canaan with a Vertical drop of 1000 feet! Impressive. The area can hold a large number of skiers - with lift lines rather short. The price is competitive. (But, from March 1 to March 16 head to Canaan. It will save you 60% off a lift ticket!) In the Southern PA, Maryland region, this is a very fine area to ski at. My top pick.
Tussey Mtn., PA 500 ft, 4100 ft 7 7 of 10 Tussey is much better alternative to Roundtop. Just 2 hours North towards State College will save you 60% and give you better terrain and no lift lines. However, the mountain is not very big. Tussey Mountain is my alternative to Roundtop. Try it!
Elk Mountain, PA 1000 ft, 6000 ft 27 8.75 of 10 Elk Mountain touts itself as "Pennsylvania's Best Skiing." You will quickly recognize Elk Mtn. for its Norway Spruce trees - they are all around and shield wind effectively. The skiing has always been good; the snow is usually powder and groomed. Ski prices at Elk Mtn. are competitive and worthwhile. And check out the local Bed & Breakfast's!
